Anti-freeze and plant cooling System for Blueberry Production

Principle and budget estimation

The best system for preventing frostbite is to use a wobbler type sprinkler. Click here. See how it works in these videos:

This system can be connected to a drip irrigation system, since the working pressure for the wobbler is low. To do this, an additional outlet tap is installed on the drip system hydrant, which is connected to quick-connect pipes. As a result, the system presented in the video will be assembled. This will allow the drip system pump and supply pipes to protect part of the area against freezing. The area covered by such an anti-freeze system depends on the performance of the drip system pump. For example, if the pump performance is 50 m3/h, an area of 2 ha can be protected from freezing at -5⁰C. The cost of materials for this project is within 2300 -2500 dolars/ha without VAT. If a larger area needs to be covered, an additional pump must be installed.

Each project is individual. It is better to plan a drip system together with an anti-freeze system. Therefore, you need to decide on the area you want to grow early varieties.

After the danger of frost has passed, the sprinkler system can be dismantled, stored or moved to the area of late varieties, where on hot days you can cool the plant and thus protect the fruit from burning. Since cooling requires less water intensity, with the existing drip system and its pump you can cool 4 times more area than during frost.
